Road Shoulder/Edge Maintenance

Clay Township Public Work’s department will be doing road shoulder/edge maintenance beginning September 23, 2024.

Road shoulder maintenance will be done on the following roads Leed Hill Road, Church Road, Snyder Lane, Water Street, Ice House Hill Road, Sun Valley Road, Mountain Spring Road, Seglock Road, Yummerdall Road and Durlach Road.

The main purpose of a properly maintained road shoulder drainage system is to convey water away from the road as quickly as possible to prevent erosion of the roadway, and to prevent standing water or ice on the roadway surface.

The surface of a turf shoulder can become too high as a result of the growth of vegetation, the collection of anti-skid and foreign material.  These conditions, at times, make it necessary to regrade or cut down the shoulder.

The term ʺshoulderʺ refers to the graded area or surface adjacent to the traveled roadway, whose purpose is to give lateral stormwater support to the roadway surface.  Roadway surfaces should be adequately sloped to provide for the quick removal of surface water from the roadway into the drainage system.

This phase of road maintenance is important as the failure of pavement often starts at the joint between the roadway and shoulder. Shoulder maintenance also includes the areas just outside the physical shoulder, but not beyond the legal right-of-way.   Entrances to private driveways, places of business, and pull offs for mailboxes will not be skipped during routine maintenance operations, but deterioration from daily use are the responsibility of the property owners.

Clay Township Road Crew will cut existing extra material from the shoulder and scoop up material and haul away.  Any shoulder drop off areas will be corrected by adding extra material.  After maintenance is completed, a roller will be used to compact any disturbed soil to prevent erosion.

Road edge maintenance will be done on the following roads Hillcrest Drive, Ridge View Drive, Longview Drive, Carter Drive, Maurice Cricle, Matthew Drive, Daniel Drive, Linda Lane, Summit Circle and Sykline Avenue.

Any over grown grass that extends past your property yard edge over the edge of the road will be scraped away. All excess grass and dirt will then be cleared off the road.

Please contact the Clay Township office at 717-733-9675 if you have any questions or concerns.
